Summer is grilling season
This Marinated Grilled Steak is easy to prepare and takes little time to cook on the grill, which helps keep our kitchen time to a minimum during the warmer months.
A few health benefits of this dish
Steak is an unprocessed red meat that provides essential nutrients we need each day, like high-quality protein, vitamin B12, potassium, and zinc for proper body function (1) (2). Unprocessed animal protein, like steak, helps to stimulate the growth and maintenance of body organs like our bones (3). Dietary vitamin B12 is only available through animal sources, and it’s needed every day to support DNA and energy production, for healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, and is crucial for healthy nerve function (4). Potassium is necessary for nerve conduction and muscle contractions, and regulates body fluids (5). Zinc supports immune function, helps wounds to heal, and is needed for the senses of taste and smell (6).
Garlic is an immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory plant that contains compounds, like allicin, that can relax blood vessels, improve blood flow, and reduce the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease (7). Studies show that garlic consumption can reduce cholesterol levels (total and LDL cholesterol), lowering the risk for heart disease (8). Garlic consumption has also been found to increase hormones that minimize the loss of bone, protecting from diseases like osteoporosis (9).
Marinated Grilled Steak Recipe:
Ingredients:
Steak (about 4 ounces uncooked per serving)
1 orange, sliced thinly with peel
1 onion, sliced thin
3-4 garlic cloves, chopped
½ cup soy sauce (organic)
herbs of choice (oregano, parsley, marjoram, sage, thyme)
sea salt and black pepper to taste
Based on 4 servings
Instructions:
Note: Marinate the beef for 1 hour at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator.
Using a glass baking dish, place half of the orange, onion, and garlic into the bottom of the dish.
Season the steaks with herbs and salt/pepper.
Place the seasoned steaks into the baking dish on top of the orange, onion, and garlic.
Place the remaining orange, onion, and garlic on the steaks, pour the soy sauce over the top, and marinate.
When ready to cook, preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
Remove the steaks from the marinade (discard the marinade) and grill to desired doneness.
You can serve the steak thinly sliced over a salad, with roasted veggies, or paired with a sweet potato and greens.
Enjoy!
